A Passport to Remain

the_technology Phantom Handshakes takes so many of the things I like in music (emotive vocals, reverb, poppy jangly hooks, atmospheric synths) and combines them seamlessly into some of my favorite music released in the last couple of years. Reminiscent of The Radio Dept's Pet Grief, one of my all-time favorite albums. Favorite track: Passport (How Far I Will Be).

sun-dappled-dacy Modest and understated, yet unmistakably Phantom. Sounds like it was written and recorded on a single day, in the best way. Wears very well, I've clocked several thousand hours of listening and singalong. (Admittedly that's a bit extreme, but hey it's an eminently agreeable, cohesive album, and I usually sleep with it looping.) Taken with the banger singles between releases, all we could desire. Track ranking: 6 4 10 7 3 1 2 9 8 5. Next time around, maybe something more experimental?

I freed myself from time, Dust can pile up on my shelf If I feel the urge to cry I will let the tears flow down It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I will be, It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I have been It took me a little while it’s not easy to forget Invisible hands surround me and trap all they can get It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I will be, It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I have been Invisible hands surrounding me, Invisible life is under me Now I know what is self-love, And I dance on the sidewalk, With my tears I am cleaning up the dirt It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I will be, It’s a passport to remain no matter how far I have been

At Six 03:13
Wake me up at 6 so I can feel the breeze, so crisp I’ll bring a souvenir of this sweet morning trip, a melody To let it go is easy, isn’t it? The birds are still sleeping for once I feel at peace with me I woke up at six and left the misery under my sheets Come and see, it’s free To let it go is not easy, you are the morning light That I missed so much “It’s ok to cry”, She said “it’s ok to cry”

A friend told me she is going to be rich, A pop star, a diva, a dancing queen She’ll play a show with Billie at Town Hall, I can’t stop the daydream and kill this all She’s stuck in a Fantasy, she’s stuck in a Fantasy, It’s real I met Jean-Paul in a Cafe a while ago He’s so tall, he’s a lonely Astronaut He's been to Mars, he travels space and time "My dad should be proud of me after all" He’s stuck in a Fantasy, he’s stuck in a Fantasy, it’s real But there is nothing, it’s just a dream Someone, something Someone, somewhere No one, nowhere Stuck in a Fantasy, he’s stuck in a fantasy, it’s real

Icy blue eyes tell me your story, Your hands are shaking, a tear is running down You look nervous, Are you tired of them all? You look nervous, Are you tired of this all? A Perfect makeup to hide the signs of time That you can't accept at all Your eyes pierce me every time I cross your sight, Tell me something, Tell me a Story What was your day like? What was your day like? Where are you going? Where are you going? What was your day like? Icy blue eyes, Before you go away, get off this train Wave me goodbye What was your day like? What’s your story? What was your day like? Tell me something, Are you afraid to die? Are you afraid?

The Highway 03:08
An owl lands on the side of the road. Turn its head to look at me, but I am going to fast I’m trying to decide Trying to decide Is this what we want? Clean air, great stars I am trying to decide Clean air, great stars I am trying to decide I’m trying to decide I’m trying to decide

Long is the night for the souls That can't rest Long are the days stuck in bed ‘Cause I really don't know why These days are turning pretty dark We share the night With the souls that can't rest We share the sky but we are safe From harm but they, they are not so far away ‘Cause I really don't know why These days are turning pretty dark I am looking for that rhythm that makes me dance and laugh hard Lord, can you explain, in simple words My hope is nowhere to be found today ‘Cause I really don't know why These days are turning pretty dark

Her gold is poured into me, So I planted seeds of peace, wild strawberries Cause she forgot all the love we gave Your heart grew cold and still, like a barren field She wasted her life waiting for golden moments And now she looks back all she sees it’s a dreary scene She looked in silence at the new moon, And thought that she could reach her gravity She knows now all the love she missed, She never gets down on her knees to plant those seeds She wasted her life waiting for golden moments And now she looks back all she sees it’s a dreary scene

My Eyes 03:18
Of the winter I ignored All the signs and I've been warned To swim, To stay afloat While the tide was rising Of the spring I embraced the scent That had filled the entire land And My eyes were shining again My eyes were shiny Of September's mellow haze I took with me only a dream Where I swim, I stay afloat And the sea becomes my mom Cold, vague, dark Cold, vague And My eyes were shining again My eyes were shiny And My eyes were shining again Hiding things they can’t forget

Hotel Sereno 02:59
There's room on your picnic blanket Green dots and a fancy basket You're alone, I wish we could talk But I am shyly watching from a far Here I am on my tiny blanket, Shades of blue, I am eating an apple You seem so calm I wish we could talk I feel heavy, I am reading an old book Hey, you are my half, you are indeed You are the part of me that I would never leave There's room on your picnic blanket A cute pup is happy to lay there Next to you, she feels so secure Your hair shines I wish I was there too Here I am on my tiny blanket In the park where I came and found it The other half, the best part of me So Cheerful, wearing new white jeans Hey, you are my half, you are indeed You are the part of me that I would never leave You are my half, you are indeed The part of me that I believe

What remains? Here you lay Take me away, slow down, slow down Don’t walk away In my arms, but you are gone Why don’t you stay? Slow Down, slow down Take me away Take me away, slow down, slow down Don’t leave me here Here’s my song...
